Jeeves and Wooster on a Bad VHS Copy

«Jeeves and Wooster» (1990–1993), starring Hugh Laurie as the amiable, perpetually bewildered aristocrat Bertie Wooster and Stephen Fry as his imperturbable valet, was one of many Western television series that reached Russian audiences in the early 1990s exclusively through pirated VHS tapes, hand-dubbed by freelance translators working in real time, often for a flat fee per cassette. Quality varied wildly: a rushed or underpaid translator might skip entire scenes, a tape copied one generation too many might simply lose the audio track partway through, leaving viewers to work out an entire stretch of plot, or in this case a character’s face, from context alone — exactly the gap in Roman’s memory that gets filled in by Vadim’s own perpetually startled expression.
