«L.A. Law» (1986–1994) was a hugely popular American television drama following the lawyers of a glamorous Los Angeles firm, known for exactly the kind of visual Roman is groping to describe: a partner’s glass-walled office looking out over an open floor of desks and cubicles, radiating status and surveillance at once. Along with a handful of other prestige American dramas, it reached Russian audiences on pirated tape in the early 1990s and became a byword for a certain vision of glossy Western professional success — exactly the image Roman is chasing here, right down to a colleague getting the one office with a view of everyone else.
