The Luzhniki Container Market

The «Luzhniki» Vera means is the wholesale clothing and consumer-goods market that sprang up in the parking lots and grounds around Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium in the early 1990s, one of the largest and most famous of the open-air «container markets» that defined the era’s retail economy: thousands of individual traders, many of them former factory workers, rented a single shipping container or a stretch of counter space by the day and built entire businesses, sometimes entire fortunes, out of importing and reselling clothing, much of it from Turkey and China. For someone with sewing skills and a small amount of starting capital, like Vera, a Luzhniki container was, for a few chaotic years, one of the most realistic paths in the entire country from a factory-floor salary to genuine independence.
