The batter’s primary task is to hit the ball thrown by the pitcher and make it at least as far as first base while the defending team tries to catch or field the ball. The batter stands in a designated zone (the batter’s box) with a bat in hand and tries to make contact with the ball. In professional baseball, batters are a distinct category of player, often specializing specifically in hitting. The ability to hit the ball accurately and powerfully is one of the most prized skills in the sport, which is why successful batters are highly valued on their teams and often become the game’s biggest stars.
