Mariy El Skis

Mariy El Skis

«Mariy El» skis were an iconic product of Soviet and Russian ski manufacturing, named after the republic of the same name. Production was set up at the Yoshkar-Ola ski factory, founded in 1943 in the capital of the Mari Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (now the Mari El Republic).

These skis were known for several distinctive features:

  • Made predominantly from local birch, prized for its particular strength and elasticity
  • Had a recognizable design with a distinctive color scheme incorporating elements of traditional Mari ornamentation
  • Produced in several variants: touring, recreational, sport, and children’s models
  • Known for their affordable price and high durability, which made them popular among the broader population

In the 1970s and 80s, «Mariy El» skis were among the most widely used in the USSR, with annual production reaching several hundred thousand pairs. The factory was one of the key suppliers of ski equipment for the Soviet education system and mass sports programs.

Interestingly, in some regions of Russia the tradition of calling any wooden skis «mariykas» persists, after this particular brand — a sign of its cultural influence and wide reach.
