The Moskvoretsky brewery operated from 1959 to 2005. Address: Moscow, 1st Varshavsky Proyezd, building 1a, about a couple of kilometers from the MEPhI dormitory.
The plant was founded in 1959, although construction had begun back in 1939. Work was halted due to the start of the Great Patriotic War and resumed in 1948. Construction dragged on for a long time, and the first batches of beer were brewed in 1959. In the 1970s the plant became an experimental production facility, introducing new technologies and automating its production processes. In 1980 it was renamed the Moskvoretsky Experimental Brewery. During this period, production of “Zolotoye Koltso” (“Golden Ring”) beer in tin cans was launched, but the line later had to be shut down due to problems sourcing packaging material. Aluminum for beer cans was not produced in the USSR, and the invasion of Afghanistan cut off supplies from abroad.
In the 1990s the plant installed a soft-drink bottling line, partnering with Coca-Cola.
In the early 2000s the plant was bought out by competitors, who repurposed it into a business center.
Over its history the plant produced many different varieties of beer, from traditional Soviet brands like “Zhigulyovskoye” to its own creations, such as “Moskvoretskoye.” In Soviet times this brewery was considered something of a craft brewery, one allowed to experiment.
