The studio "Vivid," mentioned in the text, is the American company Vivid Entertainment Group, founded in 1984 by Steven Hirsch and David James (real name Dewi James). By the early 1990s, the studio had already established itself as one of the leading producers of pornographic content in the US.
The history of its founding and development
Vivid Entertainment Group was created out of the meeting of two very different people. Steven Hirsch, an American entrepreneur who became the company's public face, and Dewi James, a Welshman by origin, a former coal miner and soldier, who preferred to stay out of the spotlight.
David James was born in 1941 in Blaengarw, in a dead-end part of the Pontycymer valley, near Bridgend, in Wales. His first job, like many men in the valley, was at the open-cast site of the now-defunct Ocean colliery. At 15, he dropped out of school and went down the mine, but soon realized he could "see the writing on the wall" — the coal industry was dying.
Craving travel, James enlisted in the Gordon Highlanders, and spent 14 years in the army. After his military service, he worked in the prison service of the Bermuda government, and later moved to the US without proper documentation for legal employment.
It was precisely his undocumented status that led James into the porn industry. Working as a bartender in Los Angeles — the only job he could get without papers — he met someone who worked at an adult theater. It turned out that his legal status wouldn't be a problem for employment in the adult industry.
The company's structure and scale
By the 2000s, Vivid Entertainment Group had grown into a media empire spanning the globe. The company is privately owned by the Americans Steven Hirsch and Bill Asher, and by the Welshman David James. Its headquarters are in Los Angeles, California, where Hirsch serves as co-chairman alongside Bill Asher.
As of the early 2000s, the company's annual turnover was around $120 million. Not counting actors and crew hired film by film, James employed about 150 people. His personal fortune was estimated at around $45 million in cash, plus his share in the company, worth roughly the same amount.
In 2006, Reuters described Vivid Entertainment as one of the few studios dominating the American porn industry.
Technological innovation
Vivid Entertainment was always at the leading edge of technology. The company pioneered new formats and content-distribution technologies:
DVD technology: Vivid produced the world's first multi-angle DVD, allowing the viewer to choose the vantage point from which they watched the film. The film "Bobby Sox," using this technology, sold thousands of copies. As James boasted: "We've actually become leaders in technology. For example, when DVD came out, we were the first in the world to use things like multiple angles and multiple endings, ahead of even Disney and Warner Brothers."
Digital technology: The company quickly adapted to the digital revolution. Pornography became a driving force behind the internet's phenomenal growth — it was precisely the instant availability of images depicting anything a viewer could imagine that truly got people interested in the World Wide Web.
Mobile technology: By the early 2000s, mobile phones had become a major growth area for pornographers. Vivid launched content for phone networks in roughly 20 countries worldwide. As James noted: "Mobile phones are probably the newest of the new technologies, and we're probably already among the world leaders in that genre."
Business model and output
The uniqueness of Vivid's business model lay in the industry's capacity for self-replication. James's companies kept reissuing films shot 20 years earlier. The absence of narrative content made it possible to serve new audiences with the very same material on VHS, cable television, laserdisc, CD-ROM, the internet, DVD, and mobile phones.
"This thing has no end of life — it just goes on forever," James admitted.

Legal aspects and policy

In early-1990s Russia, Vivid cassettes were seen as a symbol of the "forbidden fruit" of the capitalist West. They circulated mainly through informal networks — student dormitories, groups of friends, where video recordings were passed along "by prior arrangement."
The technical quality of original Vivid cassettes was high, but under repeated copying through analog VCRs, quality degraded significantly. The mention of a cassette "watched down to black-and-white streaks" accurately captures the realities of the time — popular recordings were copied and rewatched until the magnetic tape was completely worn out.
Access to such content in Russia in 1993 was extremely limited. Official video-rental shops offering erotic content practically didn't exist, which explains the novel's hero being puzzled over "which video-rental shop to even bother with." Most such content circulated through shadow channels, or private collections belonging to enthusiasts.

Vivid Entertainment transformed the porn industry, turning it from a criminal business "run by crooks out of the trunk of a car" into a professional industry, with Rolex-wearing impresarios and Harvard graduates as executives.
