The Rearing Stallion

The Rearing Stallion

The rearing stallion is the emblem of the Italian automaker Ferrari. The badge depicts a black horse rearing on a yellow field, with the letters "SF" (Scuderia Ferrari) at the top.

Ferrari: A Symbol of Luxury and Speed

Ferrari was founded in 1939 by Enzo Ferrari as a racing-car division, and began producing road-going models in 1947. The brand became synonymous with:

  • High technology — Ferrari was among the first to introduce innovations in engines and aerodynamics;
  • Exclusivity — production is limited (fewer than 10,000 cars a year);
  • Prestige — Ferrari owners have included princes, movie stars, and billionaires.

The rearing-horse logo appeared in 1923: Enzo Ferrari took it from the fuselage of the plane flown by Italian flying ace Francesco Baracca, who was killed in the First World War. The yellow background is the color of Modena, Ferrari’s home city.

Today, a set of Ferrari keys (often with a red housing and a horse on the fob) signals membership in an elite club as much as ownership of a car.
